It’s the new year! While not much has changed in the masked etiquette of going to the grocery store or meeting a friend from six feet away, the music world is always shifting and growing making space for new ideas and artists. Today, I am pumped to be talking about three people near and dear to my heart who put out some soulful ditties in the past few weeks.
Sarah Katherine Lawless
Song Release
Sarah Katherine is a breath of fresh air in the music world. Her voice, reminiscent of the clean, clear, and crisp tone of Sara Bareilles, is like BUTTA(as the theater folks would say). I did spend a lot of time listening to Sarah Katherine sing Broadway tunes at our alma mater, however, her voice seamlessly transfers over to the indie pop genre.
hey (i’m dating the man you love)She has many songs on deck to be released, but most recently, “hey (i’m dating the man you love) has been racking up streams on Spotify. (I must admit I am a huge contributor to these listens, this song rocks). Built on a guitar loop and spinning record warp soundscape (added by the talented Mike Midura), Sarah Katherine allows you into the raw and real story she’s unfolding. Trust me- you won’t want to miss a thing.
“hey (i’m dating the man you love) was recorded in one live take from the comfort of Sarah Katherine’s favorite new favorite couch. Mike Midura (Berklee) mixed it and added the soundscape and Caleb Savari (Berklee alum) mastered it.

Lavender Boy
EP Release
Lavender Boy created by Sage Jepson (another amazing boco belter) is an extremely talented and wonderful person inside and out. I always loved seeing Sage in the halls because he was always donning an absolutely fresh vintage find in the form of a jacket or shoes usually.
I absolutely adore Sage and it wasn’t at all surprising when he came out with this Sam Smith-esque EP. Sage’s voice is impeccable and fits perfectly with this fantasy ep. Using percussion, airy guitar, and Sage’s main instrument, his voice, I get lost time and time again in “dream land".”
Peach is one of my favorites from this floating little ep. Featuring our own Sarah Katherine in the video clip, we enter Sage’s dream land of dripping red and Miss Monroe herself. Built on a growing percussive repetition, Peach takes me in and wraps me in its arms. Brooding and growing in intensity, Peach is a classic. In the entire EP, lavender boy plays with vocal layers and atmosphere weaving into the ora that is dream land. All recorded and produced by Sage Jepson.

“I Am Looking”
A favorite of this blog, Cindy Latin, dropped “I am Looking” this morning January 12th, 2021 starting the new year off right with this brassy banger.
My favorite section of the song is the breakdown at around 2:30 where it opens up into jazzy solos. It is the quintessence of walking into Birdland on a Friday night in the city. Cindy captures the spirit, flare and sexy soul of jazz and adds her incredibly unique vocals on top. There is no one I can even think of to compare Cindy to, and that in itself is so riveting.
