Cassie’s Crutch: Debut Album
Cassie’s Crutch
“Cassie’s Crutch”
West Hartford based band, Cassie’s Crutch, released 10 song DEBUT album on February 12th. The jam band which was founded at The University of Hartford includes members: Josh Cocuzzo (bass, backing vocals), Kevin Funnell (vocals, cello), Ryan Levin (guitar, backing vocals) and Hunter Rock (drums, backing vocals).
The album is light hearted, jazzy and hones in on that old school classic emo feel. It opens with driving “Entropy", with Kevin Funell’s sailing vocals which remind me of Sense Field’s vocalist Jon Bunch style, but cleaner.

Cassie’s Crutch upbeat album is full of enticing guitar lines; kudos Mr. Levin, and rocking solos. Before this album came out, I was a huge fan of “Sunshine and Grey,” a teaser off the album that dropped earlier this year which immediately sets a groove with arpeggiating guitar and driving drums. This fully fledged album takes in those ideas and formulates an entire creation.
The guitar also sets the mood in slower song, Sol. This song would be perfect for that famous scene in every movie where the main character is on a bus off to nowhere looking out the window longingly. So- hop in the car and give it a shot to this tune. My favorite part is around 2:15 where the song opens up into a beautiful cacophony of horns and strings. (If you know me at all, you know I am a sucker for an orchestral section). It is done with extreme taste and the song finishes out with the same repeating guitar section that drew us in.
I am a huge fan of all the little jazz solos this band weaves into their songs; it’s in a way unexpected yet sits in the pocket perfectly; (hear guitar licks at 1:50 and sweet sax at 3:10 in You for some prime examples).
This album was released into the belly of the Covid beast, but I know when the waters clear, you will be hearing and seeing much more of Cassie’s Crutch.
Careful Baby, Don’t Get Caught Up.
Cassie’s Crutch debut album features a magnitude of musicians, including: Abby White (vocals), Cam Cheyney (Sax), Mike Carroll (Trombone), Christie Echols (Upright Bass) Carissa McQuaid (Violin) and Matt Guevara (Trumpet).
